Eddie Bauer bankruptcy: Retail operator files for Chapter 11
Are the doors about to close for good at Eddie Bauer? The retail operator for around 180 Eddie Bauer stores in the U.S. and Canada has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, leaving the future of these locations hanging in the balance.

The Chapter 11 Filing

Eddie Bauer LLC, which operates about 180 Eddie Bauer stores in the U.S. and Canada, announced it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on February 9th. The company attributed its financial problems to declining sales, supply chain challenges, and other issues. This marks the third bankruptcy filing for the brand in just over two decades.

Catalyst Brands CEO Marc Rosen stated that this restructuring is the best way to "optimize value for the retail company's stakeholders" and ensure the parent company remains profitable. The company is seeking a buyer, but if one isn't found, U.S. and Canadian stores will close.

The company has entered a restructuring support agreement with its lenders to facilitate the Chapter 11 process. Eddie Bauer plans to conduct liquidation sales while seeking a buyer for its operations.

What's Safe: Online and Brand Ownership

The good news for Eddie Bauer fans? The Chapter 11 bankruptcy is not expected to impact the brand’s manufacturing, wholesale, or e-commerce operations. Retail operations outside the U.S. and Canada are also unaffected.

Authentic Brands Group owns the Eddie Bauer brand's intellectual property, including its name and trademarks. They may license the brand to other operators in the future.

Authentic Brands Group had previously announced an expanded partnership with Outdoor 5, LLC to handle e-commerce, wholesale operations, design, and product development in the U.S. and Canada. Operations of other brands in the Catalyst Brands portfolio are not affected.

A Century of Adventure

Founded in 1920 as Bauer Sports Shop, Eddie Bauer has a long history. The store says it aims to "inspire, enable, and empower everyone to experience the outdoors and live their adventure."

Eddie Bauer's products range from performance outerwear to apparel, footwear, and accessories. The brand is available online in the U.S., Canada, Germany, Japan, and other international markets.
