Nvidia Bids $13B for Hugging Face

Nvidia has agreed to acquire Hugging Face, an open-source AI model repository, for $12.9 billion, as reported by The Information on Wednesday, August 27, 2026. This significant deal represents one of Nvidia's largest acquisitions to date, highlighting its deepening commitment to the artificial intelligence sector.

The acquisition emphasizes Nvidia's strategy to expand beyond its core chip manufacturing business into broader AI infrastructure and platforms. Hugging Face, known for hosting machine learning models and datasets, plays a crucial role in the open-source AI community.

This move suggests Nvidia views the demand for AI technology as continually expanding. It aims to integrate a key component of the AI development ecosystem directly into its offerings.

Why is Nvidia acquiring Hugging Face?

Hugging Face was previously valued at $4.5 billion in a 2023 funding round. Nvidia was among the companies, including Salesforce and Alphabet's Google, that participated in that $235 million investment.

This latest acquisition shows Nvidia's intent to capture more of the AI value chain. It seeks to own not just the hardware but also critical software and community platforms that drive AI innovation.

Analyzing the Acquisition's Scale and Impact

The $12.9 billion acquisition of Hugging Face represents one of Nvidia’s largest deals to date, reflecting a significant investment in the AI software and platform space. This scale underscores Nvidia's aggressive strategy to diversify its influence within the AI industry, moving beyond GPU hardware dominance into crucial ecosystem components. It signifies a major bet on the continued expansion of AI development.

This acquisition is part of a series of large-scale investments and partnerships for Nvidia. The company is also in discussions with OpenAI to secure $250 billion in financing for a data center, according to WSJ reports. Additionally, Nvidia will acquire $1 billion in new shares of South Korea's Naver as part of a joint effort to build a new data center.

Such investments illustrate Nvidia's dual approach: developing its core hardware offerings and expanding its footprint through strategic acquisitions and partnerships. This contrasts with earlier reports about Nvidia's chip strategies for specific markets.
